  • Respected journal prints a call for Tamiflu boycott

In a letter to the BMJ, one of the top medical journals in the world, a researcher is taking Big Pharma giant Roche to task. Peter Gotzsche, who heads the Nordic Cochrane Centre in Copenhagen, wants European governments to sue the drug maker and boycott their products until they release all the data they have on Tamiflu.

Gotzsche says that governments should sue to get back the money that has been “needlessly” spent stockpiling the flu drug Tamiflu. He says there’s no evidence that Tamiflu actually stops the flu.

I agree. But what in the world took you so long Gotzsche?

Back in 2008 we were already warning readers about the shocking side effects associated with Tamiflu. As the 2009 swine flu scare ramped up, we reminded you that we felt that the risks outweighed the “meager benefits.” By the end of 2009, we told you in no uncertain terms that we think Tamiflu is downright useless.

So why has it taken three years for someone in the mainstream to finally call for some action?

Sadly, despite assertions that Tamiflu’s effect on the flu is limited, it remains listed among the World Health Organization’s “essential medicines.” Governments and other agencies use this list to guide their stockpiling of drugs.

Even more shocking is that it has stayed on that list in spite of a current investigation by the European Medical Agency into Roche’s failure to properly report potential side effects for 19 drugs including Tamiflu.

Billions have been spent on Tamiflu, despite the smoke and mirrors act and the mounting evidence that the drug may be not be as effective as thought, or that it could even be dangerous. And despite promises to release trial data on the drug, we’re still waiting to see all of the evidence that Roche claims proves Tamiflu’s effectiveness

Meanwhile, while Gotzsche’s call to action is shaking up things in Europe here, across the pond, there hasn’t been a peep out of the U.S. on this issue. In fact, on the CDC website, Tamiflu is still recommended for the 2012 flu season.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to take the recommendation. The best way to fight the flu is to build up your immune system so you don’t get it in the first place. Here are a couple of Dr. Wright’s tried-and-true immune system boosters:

Vitamin D: Get plenty of sun and take 5,000 IU daily (2,000 to 3,000 IU for kids).

Vitamin C: Adults should take a minimum of 3 grams per day (kids should take less). Dr. Wright also recommends taking the “bowel tolerance” level of C when you’re sick…meaning you should take as much as your body will tolerate without causing diarrhea.
