The downside of smoking radioactive fertilizer
The first person to set fire to tobacco and inhale the smoke must have been completely bonkers. Inhale smoke? On purpose? Why would anyone do that?
And yet, it caught on in a big way, didn’t it? And that huge popularity of tobacco products is apparently the key to why it’s so harmful.
Obviously, tobacco farmers grow massive volumes of their crops. And that requires massive amounts of calcium phosphate fertilizers, which contain (believe it or not) a radioactive element called polonium-210.
That’s right — radioactive fertilizer. What could possibly go wrong with THAT plan!?
The answer to that question is pretty obvious: cancer. In animal research, polonium is the only component of cigarette smoke that’s proven to cause cancer. One study determined that smoking one and a half packs of cigarettes per day has the same effect on the respiratory tract as 300 chest x-rays per year.
That’s ridiculously dangerous!
The real kicker can be found in a 2011 report that leaked a little secret that nobody outside the tobacco industry was ever supposed to know. A method called “acid wash” was developed to remove polonium from tobacco leaves. But the acid had an unintended effect. It made nicotine harder to absorb. That means cigarette smokers wouldn’t get their nicotine kick.
Of course, THAT was unacceptable, so acid wash went nowhere. And polonium stayed in.
If you’re a smoker, right about now you might be thinking of switching to “natural” cigarettes. These products leave out chemical additives, which is better. But don’t be fooled into believing that word “natural” means they are safe. The truth is they still might contain tobacco grown with a calcium phosphate fertilizer.
I understand it’s possible to track down true organically grown tobacco and roll your own cigarettes with organic rolling papers. But if you’re going to go to all that trouble, why not try something much easier and healthier instead?
Recent research shows that you can quit your addiction by significantly curbing your desire to smoke. And some smokers have managed to do this in just five hours without taking a drug or even a supplement.
