Double dose of diabetes prevention

I’m always on the lookout for news about diabetes prevention and management — too many people in my life are dealing with the disease.

So when I came across two new studies touting the benefits of two possible preventers, I couldn’t resist packing them into one eTip.

One involves a supposed vice, and one involves getting more of an essential nutrient. The second one is pretty exciting, too — this is the first time researchers have demonstrated a link between this nutrient and type 2 diabetes.

Let’s start with the vice first.

According to Dutch researchers, healthy adults who indulge in one or two glasses of alcohol per day could be cutting their diabetes risk.

Over the course of a 10-year study of 35,000 adults between the ages of 20 and 70, the researchers found that people who consumed alcohol moderately and led a reasonably healthy lifestyle had a 40% lower chance of developing type 2 diabetes than people who abstained from alcohol.

Now, maybe you don’t enjoy a nightly glass of wine (I must confess, I do). So this next finding might be more your speed. And we can thank the Dutch for this one, too.

The study results, published in the journal Diabetes Care, show that people who get plenty of vitamin K from food seem to be 20% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes. This is the first study showing a relationship between vitamin K and diabetes risk.

Vitamin K comes in two natural forms. K1 is, for the most part, found in green leafy vegetables as well as some vegetable oils. K2 is found in meat, cheese, and eggs. Both were linked to a lower diabetes risk in the study, but the relationship was stronger with vitamin K2.

They’re not sure what’s at the heart of the relationship, but researchers suspect it has to do with evidence that vitamin K reduces inflammation, which may improve the body’s use of insulin.

Study participants with the highest intakes of K consumed between 250 and 360 micrograms of total vitamin K each day. Of course, if you’re going to add K2-rich meats and eggs to your diet, make sure you’re eating free range and organic for the best possible health benefits.

    Dispute Resolution by Binding Arbitration and Class Action Waiver

    The arbitrator’s award shall be binding and may be entered as a judgment in any court of competent jurisdiction. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, no arbitration under this Agreement may be joined to an arbitration involving any other party subject to this Agreement, whether through a class action, private attorney general proceeding, class arbitration proceedings or otherwise.
