Well, according to a new study published in Rheumatology, supplementing your diet with omega-3 fatty acid can help you fight off the debilitating pain of RA before it starts.
In the small study, researchers at the Colorado School of Public Health looked at dozens of patients suffering from RA and found that only 6 percent reported taking an omega-3 supplement. And blood tests confirmed that those with the autoantibodies for RA had significantly lower levels of three essential omega-3 fatty acids than the control group.
You see, rheumatoid arthritis is caused by a faulty immune response – your autoantibodies mistakenly attack healthy tissues and organs instead of diseased ones. And two crucial omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA, may help fight off a protein that that allows the autoantibodies to misfire at the wrong enemy, according to the study.
Now, before you start stocking up on salmon at the local fish market, you should know that modern fish farming practices have lowered the amount of omega-3 in many foods by as much as 40 times since the turn of the previous century. Cold-water fish like salmon were once abundant resources of omega-3 fatty acids…but now, not so much.
That’s why I recommend a supplement of 1 to 3 grams of fish oil a day to go along with a well-balanced and varied diet that includes lots of animal protein and foods full of antioxidants like cherries, broccoli, mushrooms, walnuts, and flax seed.
That’s not only a winning formula for the fight against rheumatoid arthritis, but it’s also a recipe to overall health and well-being.
