  • Get off the statin bandwagon once and for all!

If you’re one of the millions of people taking statin drugs, you know that you can never seem to get those numbers low enough to appease your doctor.

He may have even tried to push a SECOND med on you… just to see how LOW you can GO!

But the downside of those drugs includes increasing your risk of diabetes, kidney failure, and permanent muscle damage.

And the upside? Well, the jury’s still out on that – because there’s no proof that having high cholesterol increases your risk of cardiovascular disease!

But if your cholesterol levels truly are high and could stand to be brought down even just a touch, there’s a natural alternative that can help you slash them — safely.

According to a review of studies published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the answer can be found in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).

As I’ve shared with you right here in eTips, I frequently turn to the ancient practice of Chinese medicine when treating everything from metabolic syndrome and ulcerative colitis to allergies.

After all, with an ancient culture and a fifth of the world’s population living within its borders, China has a long history — and a LOT of practice — using its traditional methods to treat heart disease.

One of the most impressive studies in this new meta-analysis followed 4,870 heart attack survivors, some of whom were given a form of red yeast rice, called Xuezhikang.

After nearly five years, those who took red yeast rice also lowered their triglycerides and LDL (a.k.a. “bad” cholesterol) and increased their HDL (a.k.a. “good” cholesterol).

That’s because red yeast rice actually works much the same way as statins – but without all those potentially deadly risks!

Not only that, but in the study, cardiovascular events were reduced by nearly 6 percent in the red yeast rice group, when compared to the placebo group.

While red yeast rice might seem exotic, it’s actually easy to find in capsule form online or at your local health food store.

And for other natural alternatives to statin drugs, look for an integrative doctor with a lot of experience using herbal medicine to treat cardiovascular disease.

As you know, I’m a big fan of many of the practices associated with traditional Chinese medicine – not the least of which is acupuncture. I’ve been a practicing medical acupuncturist for many years, and I’m still astounded by the number of health conditions it can help to ease.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one of the most natural, non-toxic, and drug-free ways of lowering your cholesterol without taking statins: Go Paleo!

The so-called “Caveman Diet” includes the right balance of foods to increase your “good” cholesterol and reduce your “bad” cholesterol – all while you’re eating delicious animal proteins, vegetables, and even a little dairy.
