Alarming Rise in Colorectal Cancer Among Children, Teens, and Young Adults, Study Finds

Even older young adults weren’t spared. Those ages 30 to 34 experienced a 71 percent increase, while rates rose by 58 percent for adults ages 35 to 39.

The Potential Risk Factors

So, what’s behind this alarming trend? While family history plays a role, researchers point to several modifiable risk factors that may be contributing to the rise in early-onset colorectal cancer. These include:

“We need to be very aware of things that can be done to prevent the development of colon cancer,” explains Anton Bilchik, MD, PhD, surgical oncologist and director of the Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Program at Providence Saint John’s Cancer Institute. He emphasizes the importance of regular physical activity and eating less processed food and red meat as preventive strategies.

Another possible factor may be the overuse of antibiotics at a young age, which can disrupt the gut microbiome and potentially predispose individuals to colorectal cancer later in life.

While the percentages reported in the study may sound alarming, it’s important to note that the actual numbers of young people diagnosed with colorectal cancer are still relatively low.
