Dementia is a thief. It steals memories, independence, and peace of mind—not just from those diagnosed, but from their loved ones too.

And one of its most insidious tricks? Robbing people of a good night’s sleep.

We’ve long known that sleep disturbances are a common and distressing symptom of dementia. About 26 percent of all dementia patients experience sleep issues, with even higher rates in certain types, like Lewy body dementia.

These sleep problems don’t just leave patients groggy and irritable. They can exacerbate confusion, increase fall risk, and accelerate cognitive decline. For caregivers, it often means sleepless nights and exhausting days, leading to burnout and health issues of their own.

A groundbreaking new study presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference 2024 is offering new hope for dementia patients and their caregivers.

Researchers in the UK have developed a non-pharmaceutical intervention called DREAMS-START that’s showing remarkable promise in improving sleep for people with dementia.

Here’s what makes this so exciting:

The study involved 377 pairs of dementia patients and their caregivers, representing a diverse range of backgrounds. Half received the DREAMS-START intervention, while the other half continued with their usual care.

The results? After just 8 months, those who received the intervention showed significant improvements in their sleep quality. Even more impressively, these benefits extended to their caregivers as well.

What’s the Secret?

The DREAMS-START program consists of six one-hour sessions, each focusing on different aspects of sleep health:

  • Sleep hygiene (healthy habits and environment)
  • Activity and exercise
  • Tailored sleep routines
  • Strategies to manage distress
  • Natural and artificial light
  • Relaxation techniques

What’s particularly noteworthy is that this program was delivered by trained graduates, not clinicians. This suggests it could be widely implemented without putting additional strain on our healthcare system.

Beyond Better Sleep

The benefits of this intervention went beyond just improved sleep. Patients also showed a reduction in neuropsychiatric symptoms—things like agitation, anxiety, and depression that often accompany dementia.

Caregivers reported improvements in their own sleep and reduced anxiety levels. This is crucial, as caregiver burnout is a major factor in decisions to move dementia patients into care homes.

For years, we’ve relied heavily on medications to manage dementia symptoms. But drugs like antipsychotics and benzodiazepines often come with harmful side effects, especially in older adults.

This study shows that a simple, non-drug approach can make a real difference. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most effective treatments are the ones that work with our body’s natural rhythms.

What You Can Do

While the DREAMS-START program isn’t widely available yet, there are steps you can take now to improve sleep for yourself or a loved one with dementia:

  • Establish a consistent sleep schedule
  • Create a relaxing bedtime routine
  • Ensure the bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol, especially in the evening
  • Encourage daytime physical activity
  • Minimize daytime napping

Remember, improving sleep isn’t just about feeling more rested. For those with dementia, it could mean better days, slower disease progression, and more quality time with loved ones.
