Resolved to quit smoking? Read this

It’s that time of year. Yes, I’m talking about New Year’s resolutions.

And if 2013 is the year you’ve resolved to stop smoking let’s be honest, quitting is hard and you might need a little extra help to stick to this one.

Maybe your doctor has suggested the smoking-cessation drug Chantix to give you that extra help that you need. But before you run that prescription over to the pharmacy, there’s something you should know.

In a study conducted by Pfizer, who makes Chantix, researchers found that there were more occurrences of serious heart problems among people on the drug than there were among folks taking a placebo.

How serious? The “cardiovascular events” included death and non-fatal heart attack and stroke. So pretty serious I’d say.

Doctors are being told to weigh the risks and benefits of recommending Chantix to their patients. Here’s the thing, though–if you’re trying to combat something that’s already hurting your heart (smoking), why in the world would you go and choose a weapon that could ALSO harm your ticker?

Of course, it’s not just your heart you have to worry about when you’re considering Chantix. Earlier this year, I told you about a bright young woman who had a promising future: That future that was snuffed out at the woman’s own hand after she turned to pharmaceutical help to quit smoking.

Her death, which was linked to Chantix, was a sad reminder of the suicide-risk warning that the FDA slapped on Chantix back in 2009. They followed the warning with the laughable advice that users of the drug should simply “be careful.” I’m going to go out a limb here and say that maybe “be careful” isn’t the most helpful advice for someone whose mental state could already be drastically altered by a drug.

Look, there’s no question that quitting smoking is a struggle. But you’re going through that struggle to improve your health and extend your life so it shouldn’t involve playing a game of chance with potentially deadly side effects.

When it comes to natural ways to quit smoking, you can safely increase your chances of success while supporting your health at the same time.

This fall, I wrote about the surprising “trick” that can help you kick smoking for good. It turns out that a good pair of walking shoes might be the key to finally tossing out the pack once and for all. And earlier, I told you how omega-3s can help you repair your health while you fight the habit.

You should also make sure you’re not going it alone. Having a support network is essential to quitting smoking. And keep this in mind as you’re struggling: The negative effects of smoking take action in mere minutes. So every single cigarette that you DON’T smoke equals major health benefits.

    Dispute Resolution by Binding Arbitration and Class Action Waiver

Either you or we may commence the arbitration process by submitting a written demand for arbitration with the AAA, and providing a copy to the other party.  The arbitration will be conducted in accordance with the provisions of the AAA’s Commercial Dispute Resolutions Procedures, Supplementary Procedures for Consumer-Related Disputes, in effect at the time of submission of the demand for arbitration.  Except as may be required by law as determined by the arbitrator, no party or arbitrator may disclose the existence, content or results of any arbitration hereunder without the prior written consent of both parties.     Notwithstanding the foregoing, the following shall not be subject to arbitration and may be adjudicated only in the state and federal courts of Maryland: (i) any dispute, controversy, or claim relating to or contesting the validity of our or one of our family company’s intellectual property rights and proprietary rights, including without limitation, patents, trademarks, service marks, copyrights, or trade secrets; (ii) an action by us for temporary or preliminary injunctive relief, whether prohibitive or mandatory, or other provisional relief; (iii) any legal action by us against a non-consumer; or (iv) interactions with governmental and regulatory authorities.  You expressly agree to refrain from bringing or joining any claims in any representative or class-wide capacity, including but not limited to bringing or joining any claims in any class action or any class-wide arbitration.

    The arbitrator’s award shall be binding and may be entered as a judgment in any court of competent jurisdiction. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, no arbitration under this Agreement may be joined to an arbitration involving any other party subject to this Agreement, whether through a class action, private attorney general proceeding, class arbitration proceedings or otherwise.

    YOU UNDERSTAND THAT YOU WOULD HAVE HAD A RIGHT TO LITIGATE IN A COURT, TO HAVE A JUDGE OR JURY DECIDE YOUR CASE AND TO BE PARTY TO A CLASS OR REPRESENTATIVE ACTION.  HOWEVER, YOU UNDERSTAND AND AGREE TO HAVE ANY CLAIMS DECIDED INDIVIDUALLY AND ONLY THROUGH ARBITRATION.  You shall have thirty (30) days from the earliest of the date that you visit the website, the date you submit information to us through the website, or the date that you send a text message to us, to opt out of this arbitration agreement, by contacting us by email at help@nutritionandhealing.com or by mail Nutrition and Healing, PO Box 913, Frederick, MD 21705-0913. If you do not opt out by the earliest of the date that you visit the website, the date you submit information to us through the website, or the date that you send a text message to us, then you are not eligible to opt out of this arbitration agreement.
