It turns out new studies are showing an important connection between diet and virility. Particularly how a so-called “healthy” food could wreak havoc on efforts to start a family.

The mainstream wants us all getting plenty of milk and other dairy products in our diets. They’re so enthusiastic: Build bones! Be strong! It does a body good!

Here’s a new slogan idea for them: Be sterile!

You’re right–they probably won’t go for it. But that doesn’t make it any less true.

According to a new study presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine annual meeting, dairy could slash a hopeful dad’s chances of becoming a father.

In the study, researchers found that the more dairy a man eats, the poorer the quality of his sperm.

Researchers started exploring the connection because they’ve noted a worldwide downward trend in sperm counts over the entire 20th century and into the 21st. One suggested reason for this is exposure to environmental estrogens. Another is that the trend goes hand-in-hand with increased obesity.

So they decided to look into dairy as a possible culprit. The researchers found that sperm was less likely to be “normal” in shape as dairy intake increased. Full-fat dairy seemed to be particularly harmful to sperm quality.

(By the way, it’s not just dairy that potential dads need to avoid. Another study found that eating lots of carbs is also linked to lower sperm count. But that’s a topic for another time.)

People often talk about women who are pregnant, or women who want to become pregnant, taking care to feed their bodies with nutritious foods. Clearly, it’s important that men who want to become fathers take the same advice to heart.

Unfortunately, dairy is still firmly in the “nutritious food” column for the mainstream (though a simple search of “dairy” at www.nutritionandhealing.com reveals the truth). So millions of men may be damaging their chances for fatherhood, despite their intentions to keep their bodies healthy.

The best we can do is to spread the word. Share this finding with the hopeful future fathers in your lives. And, chances are, you’ll soon be shopping for baby shower gifts.
