New Hope for Patients with Deadly Brain Cancer
Hearing your doctor say “You have cancer” may be the SECOND scariest thing you could ever face…
What would be the FIRST?
Hearing him say the word “brain” first.
And the most frightening brain cancer of all is glioblastoma.
This brain cancer is SO aggressive and deadly, the average patient lives just 12 to 15 months – and after five years, only 5 percent of patients are still alive.
But now, there’s new hope. Because research has uncovered a genetic flaw in most glioblastoma patients that could be the key to KILLING tumor cells – and saving countless lives.
All in the Genes
Brain cancer starts taking root years before the first symptoms show up.
But once you’re diagnosed, you’ll face one brutal treatment after another – and you still may not survive.
And if you have glioblastoma, your survival odds are even lower – in fact, this ferocious disease took the lives of Senator John McCain and President Joe Biden’s son Beau.
But a breakthrough study found that glioblastoma patients with a specific gene mutation could be key to someday beating the disease.
The science is complicated, but basically, 60 percent of glioblastoma patients have mutations in a gene called CDKN2A – or are missing it altogether.
Researchers discovered that CDKN2A helps regulate the way cancer cells process the nutrients and fuel they need to thrive, grow, and spread.
But if the gene is missing, cancer cells process fats in a way that makes them vulnerable to being killed.
Using this insight, researchers gave glioblastoma patients with the mutation a drug that targets fat metabolism, in the hopes it would KILL cancer cells.
And it DID.
On the flip side, the drug had NO effect on glioblastoma patients without the mutation.
Saving Your Brain
While no drugs currently exist that can cross the blood-brain barrier and target brain cancer cell metabolism, researchers urge making that a priority.
I’ll keep an eye on that for you, so stay tuned.
In the meantime, I recommend taking a few simple steps to reduce YOUR risk of getting brain cancer.
A good place to start is to spend LESS time with your cell phone.
Last week, I told you that the electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by your phone can not only spike blood pressure…
They’ve also been linked to brain tumors.
But here are some steps you can take to reduce your risk:
- When talking on your cell phone, limit the length of your calls, and use speaker mode or headphones, instead of holding it against your head.
- Be sure your phone is switched off before carrying it in your pocket or purse. Even better, carry it in an EMF Radiation blocking phone case or holster, available on Amazon.
- At night, place your phone far away from your bed – or better still, in another room.
One more thing…
In case you missed it, here’s what else we’ve been chatting about this week in e-Tips:
