Natural Response: Coumadin may be here to stay, but you can avoid taking it with safe, natural, blood-thinning alternatives October 1, 2002
Q: I have been a subscriber to your newsletter for many years, and now I find myself in a quandry. I am 62 and have been diagnosed with chronic atrial fibrillation. I am aware of my increased risk of stroke and have been taking a baby asprin daily along with vitamin E, ginko biloba, lecithin, fish oil and garlic supplements to keep my blood thin.
Natural Response: Eliminate your need for statin drugs for good-regulate your cholesterol production with natural alternatives October 1, 2002
Q: I read your article in Nutrition & Healing about policosanol and its effect on cholesterol. In the case of “statin” drugs, one has to take these for the rest of your life. Is this the same for policosanol or does this product cure or normalize cholesterol production after a certain period so that it is no longer necessary to take the policosanol?

Think your medical records are private? Think again. New government regulations allow virtually unlimited access to your most personal information—and they don’t need your consent! October 1, 2002
How would you like everyone you know to find out how much you weigh? OK, for a select few people, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. But I know most of you are probably at least a little self-conscious about it and would rather not have the number publicized. Now, if you think that would be bad, imagine how you would feel if all of the details of your last Pap smear, your latest prostate exam, your personal conversations with your doctor, and your prescriptions (for antidepressants, tranquilizers, painkillers-whatever) suddenly became public property.

Major losses on the European battlefront! Unless Americans fight back, the war on vitamins, minerals, and herbs will invade U.S. borders too September 1, 2002
The headlines above might remind you of newspapers you’ve seen from World War II, headlines that brought our parents and grandparents “up-to-the-minute” every day in that life and death struggle. So am I overdoing it? I’ll admit that it does sound a little extreme. You’re probably thinking “Sure, there’s a War on Terror, but an actual, serious War on Vitamins, complete with a European battlefront? Why haven’t I heard or read about it? Where’s ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, CNN, and the New York Times? One of them would have told me if there was War on Vitamins going on, wouldn’t they?”
The headlines are only half the story! Hormone replacement therapy can be safe—when you put back the missing ingredient: Nature September 1, 2002
One day in July, the phones at Tahoma Clinic suddenly started ringing off the hook. The callers were almost all women wanting answers about the risks of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). At first, I wasn’t sure where all the concern was coming from, since I usually don’t get that many calls on the same topic in a whole month, let alone in one afternoon. But then I saw the front page of the newspaper: HRT had made national headlines. Directors of a national study known as the Women’s Health Initiative abruptly stopped their research and instructed the women to discontinue taking HRT, because it increases the risks of breast cancer, blood clots, stroke, and heart attack.

Conquer COPD and breathe easier naturally—without spending your future attached to an oxygen tank! August 1, 2002
Erwin stands out in my memory because when he first came to my clinic, he looked blue. Not a “down in the dumps” metaphorical blue-he was literally blue (well, bluish-toned). It became obvious rather quickly, though, that Erwin’s unusual skin tone was only one part of a much bigger problem: Erwin was struggling for each and every breath he took. He had been diagnosed with emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD (at least, that’s what it’s been called since the 1960s; in the past few years conventional docs have started calling it chronic obstructive lung disease, or COLD).

Could a stroke steal your future? Know your risk and prevent it from happening! July 1, 2002
You probably know someone who’s had a stroke–wheelchair bound or walking difficulty, unable to use an arm or a leg (or both). In seconds, a stroke can render you physically helpless, without the ability to speak or even to smile. It always makes me sad to see a patient who was active, funny, and independent suddenly turn info a shell of their former self after a stroke. It can literally steal your quality of life–with absolutely no warning.

Natural Response: Cystitis relief in as little as 24 hours with D-mannose June 1, 2002
Q: I am a dermatologist by training but I have begun an exciting exploration and discovery into using and prescribing natural remedies. I was buying a supply of lipoic acid from BioTech at a nutritional medicine conference and saw your book on D-Mannose. I have suffered with cystitis for 30 years and have recently used uva ursi tea to get relief. As I am producing less estrogen, the bouts have become more frequent and refractory.
Clinical Tip 104 – Never say never: You can get a tan-and still avoid sunburn-with a few simple nutrients June 1, 2002
It’s an all-too-familiar dilemma for many people in the summer: You head outdoors into the sunshine with the expectation of a golden tan only to retreat indoors a few hours later looking like a boiled lobster. In several days’ time, your lobster shell peels away leaving you once again with a complexion that has come to be known “affectionately” as “pasty white.”
Toss your sunscreen and step out of the shadows! You can prevent skin cancer and still enjoy time in the sun this summer June 1, 2002
The days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer, and the dermatologists and sunscreen salesmen are getting down to business with their annual chorus. Like the best of self-proclaimed “saviors,” they threaten us with Skin Cancer Hell if we “sin” by exposing our bodies to the Great Sun Satan.

From kidney stones to canker sores, natural ways to treat your nagging health problems May 1, 2002
Q: I recently passed a kidney stone-it was the most excruciating pain I’ve ever experienced. I’ve heard that once you have kidney stones, you’re more likely to get them again. I don’t ever want to go through what I just dealt with again. Is there any way to stop them from recurring?
Clinical Tip 104 – Listen up! Your ears could harbor an important link to dry skin, an enlarged prostate, and even heart disease April 1, 2002
Didn’t your mother remind you to “wash your ears” when you were a child? Most mothers did. And if you’re anything like me, you still like to keep them clean. But for most of us, a wash-cloth and Q-tips are about as deep as our ear-care thoughts go.
Natural Response: Increase your stomach’s natural acids and get rid of heartburn completely! April 1, 2002
Q: I saw your very informative page on the web, www.tahoma-clinic.com, regarding the actual cause of heartburn. I have been suffering from chronic heartburn problems for the last five years and have eaten antacids and acid blockers like candy without any relief. After reading your article, I tried taking betaine HCl (with pepsin) tablets after each meal, and this has remarkably improved my condition. Thanks for helping me solve this problem, which my uncle (a doctor of internal medicine) wasn’t able to fix.
Natural Response: Tips on treating Graves’ disease from our own herbal expert–Kerry Bone April 1, 2002
Q: What dose of bugleweed and motherwort tinctures should be used for someone with Graves’ disease? I have ordered herbs from Gaia to use for a 25-year-old who went from hypothyroidism to Graves’ disease over a 12-month period. Thank you.
Clinical Tip 103 – Say goodbye to mood swings, tension, and irritability with an old favorite—ultra-safe L-tryptophan April 1, 2002
Eli Lilly’s relaunching of the antidepressant Prozac under its new name -Sarafem-is still bothering me. According to the advertisements on television, Sarafem is meant to help women who suffer from a form of severe PMS called premenstrual dysphoric disorder. But with side effects ranging from headaches and nausea to hallucinations and violence, Sarafem is one of the last medicines I’d ever want to give a young woman. Luckily, there’s a much safer treatment option available for women who suffer from this severe type of PMS: L-tryptophan.
Clinical Tip 102 – The $20 treatment for infertility that could save years of heartache and financial drain April 1, 2002
Infertility is not just a physical problem. It’s frustrating, heart-wrenching, and extremely expensive. Unfortunately, infertility is on the rise-and has been for decades. Couples are spending tens of thousands of dollars a year on specialized testing and procedures in their quests to have babies. Ironically, there’s been a safe treatment available in local natural food stores since the 1940s that costs less than $20 a bottle was found effective in one trial in up to 75 percent of women who tried it!
Natural Response: A potential vitamin cure for sleep apnea March 1, 2002
Q: Several years ago I stumbled onto a cure for sleep apnea in an article about beriberi. I have never heard of anyone with beriberi but I have heard of many people with sleep apnea, myself included. At the end of the article was one sentence that mentioned sleep apnea was caused by a lack of B1. As tests had shown that I was only breathing one minute out of three and a half, I was very interested. The only help the doctors gave me was to put me on a machine that blew air into my face all night, to keep me breathing.
