Your doctor could be ignoring the best treatments available-and not even know it! September 1, 2003
wasn’t always like this. From 1783 through the early 20th century, all Americans had the right to decide which treatments were safe and effective for them. But not anymore. These days, your freedom of choice has been all but eliminated.

The misunderstood mineral, Part 2: Lithium fights crime and some of your most nagging health concerns September 1, 2003
Turns out it’s not only the strict use of the death penalty lowering crime rates in some areas of Texas. And while I’m sure “Dubya” would be quick to take credit, it’s not stricter laws or changes in sentencing guidelines either. Using 10 years of data accumulated from 27 Texas counties, researchers found that the incidence of homicide, rape, burglary, and suicide, as well as other crimes and drug use, were significantly lower in counties whose drinking water supplies contained 70-170 micrograms of lithium per liter than those with little or no lithium in their water.
Natural Response – The bypass benefit of this natural clotbuster August 1, 2003
Q: …Clot formation is a fact of life following heart bypass surgery. The mortality statistics are grim, the choice of maintenance medications prescribed for bypass patients are dangerous, and in many cases, ineffective as well. The current mainstream medical treatment status following heart surgery can be summarized as unsatisfactory…
Stop the “harmonization” of your vitamins! August 1, 2003
For most politicians and bureaucrats, diversity is a sacred concept. Strange, though, how diversity vanishes when it interferes with a more important political and bureaucratic goal: regulation-especially regulation that serves very powerful financial interests.
The misunderstood mineral, Part 1: Think young into your 90s with this anti-aging secret for your brain August 1, 2003
The biggest problem with lithium treatment is people’s perception of it. Since its most well known use is for bi-polar disorder, lithium sometimes encounters the same stigma as mental illness itself.

Natural Response – Strontium for osteoporosis: No bones about it July 1, 2003
In a recent newsletter you wrote about the effectiveness of strontium for increasing bone density. However, I have a concern about its use. We know that fluoride has been advised for women with low bone density. Fluoride, as we know, does increase bone density but of a very inferior quality of bone, so much so that hip fractures were more prevalent with fluoride supplementation than without fluoride. Since your article does not mention the quality of the bone through strontium supplementation, I am wondering if there is any information available on strontium’s effect on bone quality. Thank you for any help you may be able to give in regard to the quality of bone brought on by strontium supplementation.
Clinical Tip 113 – The first step in heart disease prevention: Check your testosterone levels June 1, 2003
Estriol isn’t the only hormone back in the limelight these days. Very recently, yet another research report underlined the importance of testosterone and cardiovascular disease in men.
The amazing medical privacy disappearing act: now appearing in neighborhoods everywhere June 1, 2003
Sue Blevins (president of the Institute for Health Freedom) asked recently: “What would you call a federal regulation that gives more than 600,000 doctors, insurers, and data-processing companies permission to share your medical records without your consent? The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) calls it a medical privacy rule.”
Natural Response: Clear up “brain fog” with six common vitamins May 1, 2003
Q: Please address the issue of seizures. My husband developed them after heart valve surgery 11 years ago but they were not diagnosed until two years ago. Since that time he has been on Dilantin, Neurontin, and now Keppra with varying results. The worst part of the medications is that he is so “foggy” mentally, and that is with a small dosage.
End crippling spasms in minutes–even halt some heart attacks–with one amazing mineral May 1, 2003
Like most natural medicine physicians, I believe very firmly in helping every adult take responsibility for his or her own health care. That’s why Nutrition & Healing focuses mostly on things you can do for yourself to prevent illness, relieve symptoms, and restore health.
Natural Response: End a lifetime of painful periods in as little as two months April 1, 2003
Q: Our 20-year-old daughter has always had painful menstruation. Recently the periods started to drag on for 2 weeks. A check-up at the gynecologist revealed nothing abnormal. But then he prescribed her birth control pills. She really has no intention of using those. What would you suggest she could do to help her problem?
The center of the medical universe changes for the better—thanks to you! April 1, 2003
For years, the Boston area and particularly Harvard have taken a great deal of pride in their medical institutions. So much so, in fact, that they refer to themselves (only partly in jest) as the “Center of the Known Medical Universe.” But even if they do have overinflated egos, I’ll agree that some fairly amazing medical developments have come out of Harvard and the Boston area.
Say goodbye to most arthritis pain for good in eight steps-or less April 1, 2003
Last month, you read about different ways to protect your heart-a topic not making many headlines these days, but one that’s still critical to your health. This month, I’ve chosen another topic that you’re also not hearing much about lately (except in drug ads), even though it probably affects many of you on a daily basis: arthritis.
Natural Response: Herbal prostate support-which claims should you believe? March 1, 2003
Q: I’m confused by what seem to be conflicting claims for herbal treatment of prostate enlargement. Does stinging nettle decrease or increase the amount of testosterone? And what is DHT? Is it good or bad? What does it do?
Fish oil and 33 other natural secrets to tackle all your heart’s risks March 1, 2003
High cholesterol is hardly news these days. The media, the patent medicine industry, and even the federal government (“los Federales”) have all poured a great deal of time, energy, and money into “educating” us Average Joes on the dangers of high cholesterol. Of course, they’ve also assured us that the countless patent cholesterol-lowering medications and the National Cholesterol Education Program are pretty much all we need to arm ourselves in the war against heart disease.
Boost brain power or slow Alzheimer’s disease with one natural supplement February 1, 2003
If you wait around long enough in the health world, eventually ancient treatments seem to creep back into the limelight. Take galantamine, for example. It’s a natural alkaloid from flowers that was first used to restore memory over 2,000 years ago. Now, “modern” research is finally rediscovering what our ancestors knew centuries ago. This is great news for people struggling with Alzheimer’s disease.
Fight—even prevent—osteoporosis with the hidden secrets of this bone-building miracle mineral February 1, 2003
If you haven’t heard of Forteo® yet, get ready. It’s the latest “miracle” on the patent medicine scene, so I have no doubt the media frenzy is on its way. Especially since the mainstream just hasn’t found many options for osteoporosis, the condition for which Forteo supposedly works wonders.
The “original human diet” secret to erasing cancer, diabetes, obesity, and more January 1, 2003
We’ve come a long way since the hunter-gatherer days, and I’m not saying that all of the changes are bad-or that we should all start running around in loin-cloths, stalking and killing our dinners. Nevertheless, that is how our bodies are designed to be nourished. So this month I thought I’d show you how to get “back to basics” with a modern adaptation of this health-promoting, historic diet.
Breast cancer prevention straight from the grocery store: Stop the most feared disease among women from happening to you December 1, 2002
It’s no wonder that breast cancer is the biggest fear of so many women. All you hear about these days are the dismal odds: Currently, one in eight women-that’s 17 million-is expected to be diagnosed with the disease. And the treatment options are nothing short of barbaric: surgery that leaves you disfigured, radiation that leaves you swollen and tender, and chemotherapy that leaves you weak, bald, and nauseous.
Natural Response: A breakthrough clot-buster: Sometimes even the alternatives have alternatives December 1, 2002
Q: Thank you for the interesting and useful information in “The Whole Truth about Drug Ads” in the July 2001 issue of Nutrition & Healing highlighting cod-liver oil, instead of aspirin, as an effective way to prevent blood clotting.
Are those “nutritional supplement” drinks all they’re cracked up to be? December 1, 2002
Someone recently gave me a label from a can of Ensure Plus, a drink that’s apparently widely advertised as a “nutritional supplement” with “concentrated calories to help maintain healthy weight.” The label says it’s “No.1 doctor recommended.” If that’s true, it just goes to show you, once again, the sorry state nutrition information and knowledge passed along by many medical schools.
Natural Response: Getting back to your old get-up-and-go November 1, 2002
Q: I am 83 years old and enjoy reasonably good health, taking Synthroid in addition to multi-vitamins, minerals, vitamin E and vitamin C supplements. In the last year I have experienced more fatigue. A recent article stated that when routine blood tests are normal, check DHEA levels. My blood tests results were…in the normal range. Do I need other hormone tests or what treatment do I need?

Natural Response: Do you really need vitamins and minerals? November 1, 2002
Q: Lila Lee (Ph.D.-Chemistry) advocates enzymes and strictly organic meats and produce to cure all problems. She claims all unsaturated fats are thyroid toxic (except olive oil and coconut oil). Minerals, vitamins and isolated amino acids are also not recommended. All this seems to be at odds with the articles I’m reading as a new subscriber to Nutrition & Healing. As a hypothyroid individual, I’m wondering how to resolve the seeming conflict between the two viewpoints.

Could one bottle in your medicine cabinet hold the healing secrets for everything from cysts to toenail fungus? November 1, 2002
Can you imagine drinking dirty, contaminated water right from a river? In most cases, you’d have a lot more to worry about than a case of infamous “Montezuma’s revenge.” Depending on what part of the world the water is in, it could be infested with all sorts of disease-triggering bacteria (cholera comes to mind, but that’s just one example). But despite all this danger, I have a friend, a retired Indian physician, who likely drank contaminated water for 30 years while he traveled from village to village in Africa-and he never got sick once. All he did was add a few drops of a common solution (after straining the sediment and debris through a cheesecloth, of course) two or three minutes before he drank it.
